Long Distance

“So how long will you be gone again?” Olivia leaned into her fiancé. John sighed, rubbing circles into her shoulder. “About a year.” Olivia tensed. “And the time difference?” she peered up at him. “Ten hours.” John pressed his lips to her temple.

They held each other in silence for a moment, marveling in the scent and warmth of each other. The sounds of the bustling airport were dulled from their senses. Startled by something wet hitting her forehead, Olivia faced her lover and her eyes grew soft. “John.. If you cry, I-I’m gonna-” her voice cracked as she blinked tears from her eyes.

John brought a hand up to her cheek and wiped them away. “I’m sorry Liv.” he whispered. “Knowing that I’m the reason you’re crying freaking kills me.” he said as tears dripped onto his fatigues.

His voice began to falter as he held her tighter. “Maybe it would’ve been better…if we had never gotten together.”

Olivia broke from his grasp and stared deep into John’s eyes. “D-don’t ever say that!” she almost shouted. “The day I met you was the second best day of my life! And that only falls second to the day you asked me to marry you!” she whimpered.

Olivia took a breath and held his face gently. “John, remember the reason why you do this.” she gestured to his uniform. “You do it for our future.” she wiped a tear from his jawline. “Not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for the hard work you do.” John left a chaste kiss on her lips. “God Olivia, I’m gonna miss you so much.”

She smiled sadly. “In a couple of years, we’re gonna be so thankful that we made these sacrifices.” she said pulling him into her embrace and held him for a moment.

“Hey.” she whispered from over his shoulder. “When the sun rises here, I’ll think of you and how hard you’re working for our future. And when the moon rises over there, you think of me and how hard I’m working as well.”

nuzzled into her neck. “I think that’ll make my night shifts a lot easier.” he chuckled.

“Flight 1313 is now boarding, please line up with your boarding passes ready.” the speaker cut out.

“I guess that’s my cue.” he whispered. “I love you Olivia, I’ll see you soon.”

“I love you too John and not soon enough.”
